“The Bard” Gourmet Green Smoothie

The chard in my garden has grown large enough to start eating, so here’s a delicious smoothie I concocted this morning to celebrate the start of my homegrown chard season (and to get rid of the remaining frozen fruit from my last shopping trip in my freezer before I go to the grocery store today)!

And yes, this smoothie is so good that you will want to tell stories 😉

Ingredients:

2 bananas, cut into coins, frozen

1/2-3/4 C papaya, diced, frozen

3 Medjool dates, pitted

4-5 large leafs + stalks (or about 1 1/2 C) Swiss chard, washed and chopped

about 1 C water for blending

Directions:

Add banana and water to blender and blend until smooth.  Take about 1/3 of the contents into a glass.  Add the papaya to the blender and blend again until smooth.  Empty half of the contents into the glass with the first layer of the smoothie.  Add the dates and chard to the remaining smoothie in the blender and blend again until smooth.  Top off glass.  Enjoy!

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread Smoothie

I haven’t been able to post for a few days because I’ve been busy working, but while I have a few extra minutes tonight, I’ll try to catch up with a few recipes that I recently created (my recipes are all created by me, unless noted otherwise) and that I’ve been excited to share!

In a strange, yet incredible way, this smoothie tastes just like banana bread batter, and much more like an indulgent treat than a breakfast smoothie 😉

Ingredients:

2 bananas, cut into coins, frozen

1 banana, cut into coins, fresh

2 Medjool dates, pitted

1/2 avocado

1-2 C spinach, packed

1-2 Tbsp hemp protein powder (I added 4 in my first iteration of this recipe, but feel that it would have tasted better with half the amount)

1 tsp. cinnamon

3/4-1 C unsweetened hemp milk

1 Tbsp. cacao nibs

1 Tbsp. chia seeds

Directions:

Add the frozen bananas, dates, avocado, spinach, cinnamon, and hemp milk to your blender and blend until smooth.  Pour half of the contents into a glass.  Add half of the fresh banana, spreading evenly over the top of the smoothie.  Sprinkle half of the chia seeds over the bananas.  Pour the remaining smoothie over the chia seeds, topping with the remaining banana, chia seeds, and cacao nibs.  Enjoy!

Creamy Basil Mint Mango Smoothie

Ingredients:

1/2 mango, diced, frozen

1-2 bananas, diced, frozen

1/2 avocado

1 Medjool date, pitted

1-2 C Spinach

about 1/2 C (or two very large leaves) kale

4-6 basil leaves (I use Thai basil because that’s what I have in my garden)

about 1 Tbsp. fresh peppermint

1 C water for blending

Directions:

Although this smoothie is fun layered, I really recommend blending everything together to fully enjoy how each of the ingredients compliment one another.  Add all ingredients to blender and blend until smooth. Enjoy!

Creamy Matcha Hemp Smoothie

This smoothie sure was a delicious, creamy way to start off my week!  Breakfast smoothies ftw!

Ingredients:

1 frozen banana

2 Medjool dates

1-2 C spinach, packed

1/4-1/2 avocado

1-4 Tbsp. hemp protein (optional)

1 tsp. matcha green tea powder’

1/2-1 C unsweetened hemp milk

Directions:

Add everything to your blend and blend until smooth.  Enjoy!

Stone Fruit Banana Split Green Smoothie

You can make this smoothie layered or blend it all together, it tastes delicious either way.  Now that warmer weather is here, stone fruits are a delicious fruit to add to your green smoothies to make them sweet, tart, and tasty treats.  Did you also know that stone fruits (orfruits with “stones”/pits in them rather than multiple seeds, such as cherries, plums, mangoes, etc.) are known as drupes?  Ya’ learn something new every day!

Ingredients:

1 handful of spinach

1 handful of kale

1/2 an avocado

2 Medjool dates (Make sure to pit them!  The first time I made a smoothie with them, I was so excited to try it that I completely forget that I bought them with the stone still in them, put them straight into the blender, and tiny pieces of the stone were chopped up in my smoothie :P)

1 plum (cut in half, for a layered smoothie)

2 frozen bananas

4 Tbsp. hemp protein powder

1 C cherries (freeze them the night before for a thicker smoothie)

1 C unsweetened vanilla coconut milk (or the plant-based milk of your choice; but make sure that it is unsweetened, as the extra sugar is unnecessary with the use of fruit in the smoothie)

1 C of water for blending

Directions:

For a layered smoothie, blend the spinach, kale, avocado, hemp protein powder, one date, one frozen banana, half the plum, and water until smooth.  Empty contents into glass.  Rinse out blender.  For the second layer, blend the cherries, another date and frozen banana, the other half of the plum, and the coconut milk until smooth.  Top off glass and enjoy!

If you’re short on time, blend all of the ingredients together (adding all of the coconut milk, and the water just as needed to blend).

Peppermint Plum Green Tea Smoothie

Ingredients:

Handful of kale

Handful of spinach

1 tsp. culinary grade matcha green tea powder (which gives nice, calm energy, and is packed with more antioxidants than normal green tea)

4 Tbsp. Hemp protein powder (I use Just Hemp Foods, which I purchase on Amazon for less than $11/container, and the containers last me about a week and half-two weeks, making it one of the most affordable plant-based protein powders available)

1 frozen banana

1 plum

2 pitted Medjool dates

Fresh peppermint

3-4 ice cubes

1 C cold water

Directions:

Add the kale and spinach to your blender, then add the matcha powder and hemp protein followed by the fruit, ice, and water.  Blend until smooth and enjoy!
